What brought you to Rusto Garage?
I saw a post on Facebook, and being a big fan of Rust-Oleum products I checked it out.
What’s your favourite part of this online community?
I love learning what other people are doing with their cars and other projects.
How would you describe yourself/occupation to a complete stranger?
I am a lifelong car guy who loves all things automotive. My dad was an engineer for GM before he retired in 1987 (he had a big hand in the development of the 1969 K5 Blazer), so I was exposed to some cool vehicles as a kid. I pursued a career with GM as a result, and retired from GM after 32 years.
What interests you most about the automotive world?
I love the passion people have for their cars, and the different ways they personalize them.
What automotive projects do you like to focus on?
I enjoy personalizing cars...this could be anything from painting wheels, designing vinyl graphics or even the occasional repaint of a car.
What is your favourite Rust-Oleum product? How has it helped with your automotive projects?
I really like your spray paints. They are easy to apply, come in a nice variety of colors and produce nice finishes.
What is your favorite automotive project you’ve done and how did you accomplish it?
About 15 years ago, I bought a 1970 VW Beetle. It was in nice shape, but the paint was horrible. I taught myself to paint with that car and used Rust-Oleum paint (quart cans, thinned for use in an automotive sprayer). I changed the color of that car four times in five years before selling it to a friend.
What’s the most challenging project you have tackled (or are putting off!)?
The VW project was toughest, only because I took every panel off and painted it in my garage. Space was limited, so I did a real tiptoe dance around those parts when painting!
If you could create any type of automotive product/project (with no limitations), what would you design and why?
Since retiring, I have been thinking of buying a small warehouse and creating a "social garage" where friends could store and work on their cars.
What is your dream ride?
I had a 1979 Camaro Z28 that I had to sell in 1981. The guy I bought it from still owns it, and I connected with him last summer. I tried to buy it back from him, but he still wants to do something with it. I get right of first refusal, so will be checking back with him often! [How great are these photos?!!!]
Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know about you.
When I worked at GM, I was responsible for the wind down of the Saturn brand after the GM bankruptcy. I was technically the last employee of Saturn.
What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?
Don't let the fear of failure prevent you from trying something new.
Kicking back for a relaxing night: what’s your favorite meal? What will you be watching?
