Ask the expert recap: part 2

We're recapping Q&A's from our recent Ask the Expert activity. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Q: Gritty: Does your chrome tint work on diamond plate alumnum. What grit size would you use for preparing your oil based enamel for auto body clear? - @Arthur

A: Hi Arthur, yes, our Custom Premium Chrome Paint works great over aluminum, as well as diamond plate aluminum. With this coating, the smoother the surface, the better the chrome effect. You can also use our Specialty Lacquer Gloss Black to act as a primer to create an ultra-smooth surface prior to applying the Chrome spray: https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/specialty/lacquer...

If you would like to sand our enamel prior to applying a clear coat, we recommend using 220-320 grit sandpaper to degloss the finish and ensure the best bond. If the enamel application has cured for less than 7 days, we recommend allowing it to rest for at least 24 hours after sanding, before applying the clear. I hope that helps, let me know if you have any questions!

Q: Primer safe in rain:  Can filler primer be used where you sanded through and exposed some metal? If I spray this on body filler is it safe to leave it in the rain? I'm just gonna get it done.. looks good at night and far away. - @Arthur

A: Hi Arthur, I would recommend applying the primer when no rain is expected for at least 24 hours after the application. If rain gets on the primer after that point, there is no concern, though I would recommend lightly sanding with 220-320 grit sandpaper prior to painting to ensure any surface contaminants are removed. - @Kevin F

Q: Protecting the finish: I would like to know what kind of coating you would recommend for our vehicle that use for off road? Being paint, other coatings etc... We ride trails that usually have lots of low hanging tree limbs, and brush, mud and other obstacles! I am looking for something that would stand up to that kind of treatment! - @Tophat

A: Thank you for reaching out! If you are looking for added protection over your OEM clear coat, you could apply an additional coat of clear using our Auto Body Clear: https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/auto/premixed-diy...

Some customers like the rugged finish of our Truck Bed Coatings or Professional Undercoating to add a durable finish as well: https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/auto/truck-bed-an....

I hope these options help, and please let me know if you have any questions! - @Kevin F
