Ask the expert recap: part 1

Submitted to Blog

We're running an Ask the Expert activity for Rusto Garage community members' burning questions - post your question any time before March 15! Here's our first recap.

Q: Powder Coating: I was wondering if Rust-Oleum makes powder coat, or if there may be in the future? - @Tophat

A: At this time, Rust-Oleum does not offer a powder coating system. However, if this is something that we offer at a later time, we will be sure to share it here! - @Katy

Q: I was wondering if Rust-Oleum makes a carburetor paint, plate, or finish to restore the appearance on vintage carburetors after a rebuild, or to make a more modern EFI system have a classic look and hold up to fuel? If not, may there be in the future? - @JJFerrero

A: Great question, thank you for reaching out! The closest product we have will be our Automotive 600° Engine Enamel, which is suitable for engine parts that will not exceed 600°F when heated: https://www.rustoleum.com/product-catalog/consumer-brands/auto/specialty-pa... fully cured, fuel spilled on our Engine Enamel will not damage the coating.

I hope this helps, if you have any additional questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. - @Kevin F

Q: Do restorers affect the life of piece being restored? Just how do the trim and headlight restores work? Does it take anything away from, or subtract anything from the life of the piece being restored? - @Luggnutt

A: The process of a headlight lens restore is similar to polishing metal. Overtime, the sun, road debris, and bugs create imperfections in the plastic of the lens (Essentially small scratches in different directions and of various thicknesses and crud creating a haze or dull finish).

Since most headlight lenses are smooth on the outside, The kit comes with fine grit sandpaper. The various grit sandpaper allows you to reduce the size of the scratches and remove contaminants. Once you get the scratches as fine as you can with the sandpaper, with metal - you would buff the surface with a buffing wheel and compound, but a buffer would generate too much heat and distort the plastic headlight lens, so Rust-Oleum has a magic patented liquid on a wipe that smooths and protects the lens without the heat of a buffer and provides a clear finish with excellent results!

So to answer your question, I do not believe that this would take away from the life of the lens, but the sandpaper does remove a fine amount of material and the wipe with liquid adds a fine amount of protectant. I hope this answers your question. Best of luck! - @JJFerrero

A: @JJFerrero We couldn't have said it better! @Luggnutt our Wipe New Headlight Restore will extend the lifespan of your headlight globes, and also clear up any UV damage and hazing. If you have any followup questions, we are happy to help! - @Kevin F
